Chapter 1 - The Concept of the Third Eye

In some religious customs, like Hinduism, the third eye pertains to what they call ajna or chakra. A chakra is a center of energy in the body. It is said to be the passageway that leads to the inner realms or the areas of higher awareness. It is known to be situated approximately in the center of the forehead, just above the intersection of the eyebrows.

In the New Age, the third eye commonly represents mental perceptions with deep spiritual significance or a state of knowledge. Oftentimes, it is associated with out-of-body experiences, clairvoyance, religious insights, and one’s ability to discover auras and chakras. There are people who can actually see other people’s auras in different colors. A person who can use his third eye is known as a seer.

Based on Father Richard Rohr’s Christian teaching, the third eye is a supernatural way of seeing. In his belief, mystics use the two primary eyes as the sense of sight, and the third eye for reflection, meditation and reason. However, they know how not to mistake knowledge with wisdom. The mystical inspection is established with the two fundamental eyes and still goes further. This degree of consciousness is what Rohr considers as “having the mind of Christ.”
