Beginning with a brief history of the Sicilian origins of the Mafia, Raab exhaustively explains how the Mob took over New York before spreading to cities across America, particularly Las Vegas, their most successful outside venture. He also shows how the New York Mafia lost a great deal of power in the 1980s and ’90s due to many significant busts and effective plea-bargaining. However, since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the F.B.I. has been focused mainly on external threats, leaving the Mafia room to regain some lost turf by moving into new avenues of crime. An investigative reporter for 40 years, Raab interviewed dozens of prosecutors, law enforcement officers, Mafia members, informants, and «Mob lawyers,» providing anecdotes and inside information that tell the true story of the Mafia and their influence over the past 80 years.

Kutipan

Dewey lined up sixty-eight witnesses, almost all hookers, pimps, madams, bookers, and jailbirds who admitted they had been promised lenient sentences, immunity, or probation for aiding the prosecution. Dewey’s main strategy was to depict the prostitutes as desperate victims of the Depression, exploited and terrorized by the Combine’s ruthless sentries.

When Dewey became the Special State Prosecutor, Schultz’s gang was the only non-Italian organization left in New York that was not subservient to the Mafia. Underworld cognoscenti referred to the five Cosa Nostra families and Schultz’s outfit as “the Big Six.”

Seeking to ingratiate himself with Lucky Luciano and gain the support of the most respected Mafia leader, Schultz converted to Roman Catholicism. He apparently believed that religion would bond him with Italian bosses and make him more acceptable to them as a coequal. One of the underworld dignitaries invited to the convert’s baptism was Charlie Lucky himself.
