He raised his head and she was shocked by the raw emotion in his face. He looked ravaged by pain, the lines around his mouth scored deep; his eyes shimmered bright with anguish.

Her fingers curved around his, unhesitatingly offering comfort. She couldn’t bear to see him in such agony.

‘Seeing you there, unconscious.’ He shook his head. ‘It was like every nightmare of the past come to haunt me.’

The past? Of course, how could she have forgotten?

‘Shahina,’ she murmured dully. The accident must have sparked memories of his first wife’s death.

He nodded, his mouth a line of twisted grief. ‘How could I have let it happen? She died not ten kilometres from where you went off the road.’

Horror dried Maggie’s mouth at the news.
