Laura Sims is an American author and poet. Her first novel, Looker (2019), was included on Best Books lists in Vogue, People Magazine, Real Simple, Entertainment Weekly, and more and is now in development for television.
Laura began identifying herself as a poet in high school. Sims studied at the College of William and Mary and earned a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Washington. She teaches creative writing, literature, and composition at New York University.
Sims began with poetry. Her debut book, Practice, Restraint, won the 2005 Fence Books Alberta Prize, and she received a Creative Artists Exchange Fellowship in 2006. The New Republic, Boston Review, and Lit Hub have published her poetry and essays. Sims also wrote the nonfiction book Fare Forward: Letters from David Markson (2014).
Looker (2019) was her first novel. Throughout the fiction, a woman struggles with personal turmoil and obsession. It has gained critical acclaim and is being adapted for television.
The second novel, How Can I Help You (2023), followed, earning praise from notable figures and featuring on several Best Books lists. The book was named a New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and Book Riot Best Book of the Year.
She is currently working part-time as a reference librarian and hosts the library’s lecture series.
