Loren D. Estleman

Loren D. Estleman is an American author best known for his work in the crime fiction genre. He has about 80 books and hundreds of short stories and articles. Estleman authored such notable characters as Amos Walker, a private detective based in Detroit, and Valentino, a film detective.

He has received 22 national writing awards and has been nominated for the National Book Award and the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award.

Loren D. Estleman was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. When he was fifteen, he sent out his first short story for publication. Over the next eight years, he collected 160 rejections.

Estleman graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Journalism. He was a journalist for police-beat news before leaving the job market in 1980 to write full-time.

Loren D. Estleman debuted with the novel The Oklahoma Punk in 1976. However, it was in 1980 that he introduced the character for which he is best known, P.I. Amos Walker, marking the beginning of his acclaimed series.

He has acquired a loyal readership across the United States and Europe, and his work has appeared in 23 languages.

In addition to crime fiction, Estleman has also written Western novels, historical fiction, and standalone thrillers. He has written book reviews for many newspapers, including The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Loren D. Estleman lives in Michigan.
