Ellis Peters

Ellis Peters was the pen name of Edith Mary Pargeter, a British novelist. As Ellis Peters, she wrote the notable Brother Cadfael series.

Edith Mary Pargeter was a prolific author of works in many categories, especially history and historical fiction. She was also honored for her translations of Czech classics; she is probably best known for her murder mysteries, both historical and modern.

Edith Mary Pargeter was born in the village of Horsehay (Shropshire, England). She had Welsh ancestry that's why many of her short stories and novels were set in Wales and its borderlands.

During World War II, Pargeter worked in the Women's Royal Naval Service and received the British Empire Medal — BEM.

Pargeter wrote under several pseudonyms. Under the pen name Ellis Peters, she wrote the hit series of the Brother Cadfael medieval mysteries.

The Brother Cadfael series began with A Morbid Taste for Bones in 1977 and continued for 20 novels until Brother Cadfael's Penance in 1994. The series was also adapted into a television series starring Derek Jacobi as Brother Cadfael.

Ellis Peters won many awards for her writing, including the Silver Dagger and Gold Dagger awards from the Crime Writers' Association and the Cartier Diamond Dagger lifetime achievement award in 1993.
