Magic is in the air at San Salvatore. At least, Lotty Wilkins seems to think so. Tired of living in the shadow of her perfectly proper solicitor husband and desperate for some alone time, she recruits a new friend to join her in renting a small Italian castle for the month of April. Rose Arbuthnot isn’t keen on the idea at first, but she too is desperate to get away. Not from an overbearing husband, but rather the opposite. Rose’s husband has grown distant, and his lack of interest has become a heavy burden on her heart. A month away sounds better than another month of loneliness.
To afford the month's rent, however, Lotty and Rose must find two more renters to join them, and their own advertisement is answered by two unlikely candidates. Mrs. Fisher is an aging dowager seeking a place where she can sit undisturbed and remember old friends from days gone by. Caroline Dester is an upper class socialite looking to escape a crowd of unrelenting suitors who can’t seem to take no for an answer.
The month together starts awkwardly between the four renters, and when husbands and suitors start turning up, their plans seem spoiled, but as San Salvatore works its magic, friendships form and revelations are made that will change everyone staying in the castle.
