Charlotte Langley

Charlotte Langley is a British author known for her gripping crime thrillers that explore social issues and moral dilemmas. She is the author of two critically acclaimed novels, The Blame (2023) and The Intrusion (2024), and has a third mystery in progress. Her debut novel was on the 2023 Crime Writers' Association Dagger Award shortlist.

Charlotte Langley was born and grew up in London. After graduating, she pursued a career in journalism. Langley works as a personal finance reporter for The Telegraph, a role that has honed her research skills and deadline-driven writing. "You develop quite a thick skin as a journalist," she noted, discussing how this experience influenced her transition to fiction.

Her debut novel, The Blame, is a psychological thriller that combines police procedural elements with a profound exploration of institutional dysfunction and personal morality. The story centres on Detective Erin Crane, whose involvement in a high-profile murder case reveals her ethical compromises. Langley was deeply inspired by real-life events, including instances of police misconduct, to create a narrative that critiques male privilege, sexism, and corruption.

"The Blame explores the tension between solving a case and the procedures required to get there," she explained.

Langley's portrayal of Erin Crane's personal and professional crises was praised for its emotional depth and complexity. "At the story's beginning, Erin is in love with the Force," Langley said, "but events cause her to see her colleagues in a more sinister light.

Several reviewers praised the book for its suspenseful pace and nuanced themes, with reviewers comparing it to the television series Line of Duty. A television adaptation of the novel is currently in development, a prospect Langley described as "so exciting.

Her second book, The Intrusion, follows Erin Crane, now a private investigator, as she uncovers the dark underpinnings of another police-related murder. A slow-burning psychological drama, it delves into the abuse of power and systemic prejudice while maintaining a tightly woven, suspenseful plot.

Langley has described her writing process as challenging and rewarding, especially when tackling dark and sensitive subjects. "I thought a lot about certain scenes," she admitted.

Charlotte Langley credits authors such as Nicci French and Tana French as influences.
